Prasart's Collection

The Prasart Collection is unique and highly diversified, presenting a priceless and incredibly interesting array of outstanding artifacts from prehistoric times to the late 19th century Rattanakosin period. There are Buddha images from several different eras, exquisite porcelain including superlative examples of multi-colored Bencharong ware and Sukhothai pottery as well as traditional Thai paintings, silver, gold, and lacquerware jewellery and fine pieces of carved and painted furniture of both Thai and Chinese origin. All are personally selected by Khun Prasart to provide a feast for connoisseurs of the art and antiques of Thailand and its surrounding regions.

Architecture of the Ages

The remarkable group of buildings which house the Prasart Collection were designed both to perpetuate the architectural excellence of former times and also to provide classical settings for Khun Prasart's many exquisite works of art.

The Red Palace at Prasart Museum, seen through the garden

The superb Red Palace was inspired by the famed Tamnak Daeng in the National Museum, built as a royal residence for his Queen by King Rama II over 200 years ago. Khun Prasart used rare golden teak and original methods in his reduced scale reconstruction, employing skilled craftsmen to ensure accuracy in every detail of workmanship. It provides an ideal showcase for the treasures of Ayutthaya and early Rattanakosin art.

An all teakwood library known as the Hor Kaeow set on stilts over an attractive pond lies beside the small but elegantly proportioned Buddhist chapel. Inside the library are historical manuscripts, books and old photographs. Nearby stands a century-old belfry obtained from a ruined temple in Nonthaburi.

During the Rattanakosin Period, European-style buildings became popular in Thailand and some classic designs appeared during the reign of King Chulalongkorn at the end of the 19th century. The Prasart Museum has a fine example which incorporates the marble floors, high ceilings, and Baroque decorations that were features of this period. Many of the museum's treasures are displayed here and it is furnished with many items from Thai homes of the time.
